The Mesolithic Period in Cornwall

چکیده
Introduction The Mesolithic has been regarded as the first major period of human occupation in Cornwall and covers the period from the end of the last Ice Age (c. 8000 bc) to the onset of the Neolithic (c. 3500 bc). Despite the length of time involved, surprisingly little information is available about the hunter-gatherers who lived in Cornwall during the Mesolithic. In this paper we review the existing knowledge of the period in this area. We also briefly survey the preceding Palaeolithic period in which Cornwall seems to have had at least intermittent visits by human groups. Prior to the formation of the Cornish Archaeological Society (CAS) in 1961, little work had taken place on the postglacial hunter-gatherers of Cornwall. In fact in 1958 Charles Thomas pointed out that the extent of knowledge and the distribution of known Mesolithic sites in Cornwall had changed little from that presented in Grahame Clark's seminal work on the British Mesolithic in 1932. Unfortunately the lack of work continued for another decade, despite the completion of Geoffrey Wainwright's doctoral thesis on the Mesolithic of South Western Britain and Wales in 1961. However, in the early 1970s interest in the subject began to grow and continues to rise. The advances in Cornish Mesolithic studies, which owe much to CAS involvement, are substantial but further research is imperative. It is to be hoped that the CAS will continue to support work on this period of Cornish prehistory.

The Shotton River and Mesolithic Dwellings: Recreating the Past from Geo-Seismic Data Sources
The Mesolithic Period in Europe has been a much-discussed area in archaeological research. As far as is known, the project reported herein represents the first attempt to visualise an otherwise inaccessible Mesolithic site with Virtual Reality (VR) technology, exploiting real geo-seismic data sources of the Southern North Sea. This paper presents the techniques and technology used in reconstruc...

متن کاملThe Emergence of Mesolithic Cemeteries in SW Europe: Insights from the El Collado (Oliva, Valencia, Spain) Radiocarbon Record
Located on the Iberian Mediterranean coast, El Collado is an open-air site where a rescue excavation was conducted over two seasons in 1987 and 1988. The archaeological work excavated a surface area of 143 m2 where 14 burials were discovered, providing skeletal remains from 15 individuals. We have obtained AMS dates for 10 of the 15 individuals by means of the direct dating of human bones. The ...
متن کاملGenomic Affinities of Two 7,000-Year-Old Iberian Hunter-Gatherers
The genetic background of the European Mesolithic and the extent of population replacement during the Neolithic is poorly understood, both due to the scarcity of human remains from that period and the inherent methodological difficulties of ancient DNA research. However, advances in sequencing technologies are both increasing data yields and providing supporting evidence for data authenticity, ...
متن کاملEffect of temperature and moisture on the dormancy and activation pattern of Oxalis latifolia bulbs
The effect of temperature and moisture on the activation of two forms of Oxalis latifolia Kunth bulbs —common and Cornwall— was studied. Gaining knowledge about the conditions needed for their activation may contribute to the control of this weed. Bulbs were kept in a refrigerator at +4°C for 13, 20, 27, 41, 48 and 55 days. At each sampling date, three sets of 30 bulbs of both forms were transf...
